Stairlift pricing is personalised because no two homes or mobility needs are the same. Your quote depends on your staircase layout, the model that suits you best and whether you go for new, refurbished or rental. That’s why a home survey is the only reliable way to get an accurate price.

Why Does the Type of Staircase Affect the Price of a Stairlift?

Your staircase is the biggest factor in what you’ll pay. A straight flight with no bends or landings is the most straightforward to fit. The rail comes in standard sections, fitting typically takes two to four hours and there’s less engineering involved. Most straight stairlifts fall between £2,000 and £4,000.

Curved staircases are a different matter. If your stairs have turns, bends, landings or spiral sections, the rail has to be built specifically for your home. An engineer takes precise measurements during the survey and those details go to the factory where your rail is made from scratch. Because of this, curved stairlifts often start from £6,000.

Here’s the thing though: two curved staircases can look similar yet produce very different quotes. The number of bends, the angle of each turn, doorways at the top or bottom of the stairs and whether there’s a landing halfway up all play a part.

Even radiators or low ceilings can complicate things.

Got outdoor steps that need addressing too? Weatherproofed models are available, but they do cost more than indoor equivalents.

What Role Does the Stairlift Model Play in Pricing?

There are several types to choose from and each sits at a different price point.

A standard seated stairlift is the most common choice. But if you have difficulty bending your knees or hips, a perch seat lets you travel in a standing position. That changes the model you’d need and, with it, the cost.

Features make a difference too. Some stairlifts include powered swivel seats that rotate at the top of the stairs so you can get off safely. Others have powered footrests, diagnostic displays or slim folding designs for narrower staircases. Each adds to the price, so think about what you actually need versus what’s nice to have.

Weight capacity matters as well. If you need a stairlift rated for a higher weight, the available models may differ and the cost can reflect that. Be upfront with your surveyor about this. It helps them recommend the right product from the start.

Because we’re an independent supplier, we’re not tied to one manufacturer. We pick from the best models across different brands, so your recommendation is based on what suits you rather than what we happen to stock.

How Do New, Refurbished and Rental Stairlifts Compare on Price?

This is where you have real choices. And the route you take has a big impact on what you’ll pay.

New

Gives you the latest technology, a full manufacturer’s warranty and the widest choice of features and finishes. It’s the best option if you’re looking for something long term. A well-maintained stairlift can last between 10 and 15 years, so the upfront cost often makes good sense over time.

Refurbished

Offers a more affordable route without sacrificing safety. We rigorously test and restore each unit to a high standard before installation. Refurbished models typically come with a 12-month warranty, identical to a new installation. The main difference tends to be cosmetic rather than functional.

Rental

Is worth considering if your needs are temporary. You might be recovering from surgery, managing a short-term condition or supporting a family member for a limited period. Rental includes the stairlift, installation and maintenance for the duration of the agreement. At the end you can return it, extend the lease or buy it outright. No large upfront cost to worry about.

Does Your Home Layout Affect Stairlift Installation Costs?

It does. Your staircase isn’t the only thing the surveyor looks at.

Narrow staircases may need a slimline model that folds tightly against the wall so other people can still get past. If there’s a doorway right at the top or bottom of the staircase, the rail might need a hinged section so it doesn’t block access. These adjustments are common but they can affect the quote.

The position of your electrical supply matters too. Stairlifts need a nearby power point for the charging station. If there isn’t one in the right place, minor electrical work might be needed. A small detail, but it’s factored into the cost.

One thing worth knowing: stairlifts are fitted to the stairs rather than the wall, so you rarely need structural changes to your home. Even in properties where other companies have said a stairlift can’t be installed, there’s often a way. It just takes the right experience to find it.

Can You Reduce the Cost of a Stairlift?

Yes. There are a few ways to bring the price down.

VAT relief is the most immediate saving. If you have a long-term illness or disability, you can claim full VAT exemption. That removes the standard 20% from your purchase. On a £2,000 stairlift that’s £400 saved. On a £6,000 curved model, you’d keep £1,200 in your pocket. You just need to complete a declaration form confirming your eligibility. A good supplier will mention this upfront.

If you’re aged 60 or over, a reduced rate of 5% may apply when the same company supplies and installs the stairlift. Not all suppliers raise this, so ask about it.

Government funding is another option. The Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) is a means-tested scheme run by local councils. It provides up to:

  • £30,000 in England
  • £36,000 in Wales
  • £25,000 in Northern Ireland

Applications for children under 18 aren’t means-tested at all. In Scotland, the Scheme of Assistance can cover 80 to 100% of costs depending on your circumstances.

The process starts with an occupational therapist assessment arranged through your council’s adult social care team. For more detail on how to apply and what to expect, have a look at our guide on grants for stairlifts in the UK.

Charitable grants from organisations like the Edward Gostling Foundation can also help bridge any gap left by council funding. Veterans may have access to additional support through service charities.

How Much Should You Budget for Ongoing Maintenance?

The purchase price isn’t the whole picture. Routine servicing keeps your stairlift running safely and extends its lifespan.

Annual servicing costs around £110 if you pay on the day, or £130 as a one-off booking. Maintenance contracts are also available covering either labour only or parts and labour together. Servicing includes a safety and performance check to catch any issues early.

And if something does go wrong unexpectedly? We offer genuine 24/7 engineer support, 365 days a year. That means a real engineer on call. Not a call centre.

All new stairlifts from Obam come with a minimum 12-month warranty. It’s worth checking exactly what any warranty covers when you’re comparing suppliers, as labour-only contracts differ quite a bit from full parts-and-labour cover.

What Happens During a Home Survey and How Does It Shape Your Quote?

A home survey is where your quote actually takes shape.

One of our salaried surveyors visits your property, measures your staircase and talks through your mobility needs. Because we employ surveyors rather than salespeople, the recommendation is about finding the right solution, not pushing the most expensive model.

During the visit they’ll look at:

  • Your staircase dimensions and configuration
  • Any architectural features that need working around
  • Where the charging point will go
  • Which models are compatible with your home

They’ll also talk through your day-to-day needs, your budget and whether new, refurbished or rental makes the most sense for you.

The survey is free. There’s no obligation and we guarantee no pressure selling. You’ll come away with a clear, itemised quote that separates the equipment, installation and any applicable VAT relief. No vague numbers.

Want to try before you decide? You’re welcome to visit our showroom by appointment. One of our assessors will walk you through the options and you can compare different models in person.
