Stairlift Pricing

Your Stairlift, Your Price: How We Keep It Fair

Stairlift prices aren’t one-size-fits-all. Your quote depends on your staircase, your mobility needs, and the aftercare you choose. That is a good thing. It means you are paying for a stairlift that fits your home, not a generic off-the-shelf solution.

We’ll explain what affects the price, what is usually included in an Obam quote, and what is not. Every installation is different, and anyone quoting without seeing your staircase first is guessing. There are no hard prices here

Stairlift Costs?

Several factors shape your quote. Understanding them helps you compare suppliers fairly and spot when something doesn’t add up.

Straight vs curved staircases

This is the single biggest factor. Straight stairlifts run along a standard rail that fits most homes with an uninterrupted flight of stairs. The rail is a standard component, so manufacturing costs stay lower.

Curved stairlifts are a different story. Every curved rail is custom-built to match the exact dimensions of your staircase: the bends, landings, intermediate turns and changes in gradient. That bespoke engineering adds to both production time and cost. If your staircase has a 90-degree turn, a 180-degree bend, a half-landing or a mix of these, you’ll need a curved rail.

Staircase complexity

Even within the straight and curved categories, complexity matters. A straightforward 13-step staircase is simpler to fit than one with a narrow width, an awkward doorway at the top, a radiator in the path of the rail or an overhanging bulkhead. Outdoor installations need weatherproofed models and fittings, which adds cost too.

Some staircases that look simple actually need creative engineering. That’s why a proper home survey matters. Anyone quoting without one isn’t giving you a reliable figure.

Brand and model

As an independent supplier, we’re not tied to a single manufacturer. We can pick the right stairlift from across the market rather than pushing one brand’s range. Different manufacturers offer different features, build quality and price points.

Features that affect price include swivel seats, powered footrests, powered swivel mechanisms, diagnostic displays and slim-profile designs for narrow staircases. A standing or perch stairlift for someone who struggles to bend their knees or hips will carry different pricing to a standard seated model too.

Not every feature is essential. Our surveyors will talk you through what you actually need rather than what sounds impressive on paper.

New vs refurbished

A new stairlift gives you the latest technology and a full manufacturer’s warranty. But it’s not the only route.

Refurbished stairlifts are pre-owned units that have been professionally cleaned, repaired and tested. Worn parts get replaced. Safety features get checked. You end up with a stairlift that works reliably at a lower price point. Both straight and curved configurations are available.

Then there’s stairlift rental. If you’re recovering from surgery or testing whether a stairlift works for you, renting avoids the commitment of buying outright. Our guide on renting vs buying covers this in more detail.

What's included in an quote?

A quote should be clear and complete. Here’s what you can typically expect from us.

Every quote starts with a visit. One of our salaried surveyors (not a commission-based salesperson) will come to your home, assess your staircase and talk through your needs. They’ll measure everything, discuss the options and recommend the most suitable solution. There’s no charge, and no pressure to commit on the day.

Why does this matter? Because stairlift pricing without a survey is guesswork. Your staircase might look standard but have a feature that changes the whole approach.

Your quote covers the stairlift itself and professional fitting by our manufacturer-trained engineers. For a straight stairlift, fitting typically takes two to four hours. Curved installations take longer: usually four to six hours, depending on the staircase.

The stairlift attaches to the stair treads, not the walls. Our engineers test everything on site and walk you through the controls before they leave.

All new stairlifts come with the manufacturer’s warranty as standard, covering you from the day of installation. The duration and scope depend on the manufacturer and model, so we’ll make sure you know exactly what you’re getting.

Refurbished stairlifts also come with warranty cover. Speak to our team for specifics on what’s included.

When you buy from Obam, you get genuine 24/7 engineer support, 365 days a year. A real engineer, not a call centre. Available at Christmas, bank holidays and every other day in between. If your stairlift develops a problem at 10pm on a Sunday, someone can help.

What optional extras are available?

Beyond the quote, there are a few things worth considering. These are optional, and your surveyor will explain whether they’re relevant to you.

Maintenance contracts

Once the manufacturer’s warranty expires, a maintenance contract keeps your stairlift covered. Options range from labour-only cover to more comprehensive parts-and-labour agreements. Regular servicing extends the life of your stairlift and keeps it running safely. You can also book individual services without a contract if you’d prefer that.

Additional features

Depending on the model, you may be able to add powered swivel seats, powered footrests, extra remote controls or a hinged rail section. A hinged rail is useful if the bottom of your staircase sits near a doorway or hallway. Not every stairlift supports every option, so your surveyor will be upfront about what’s compatible and what’s actually worth the extra spend.

VAT relief

Stairlifts are zero-rated for VAT when you buy one for personal domestic use and you’re chronically sick or disabled as defined by HMRC. That saves you 20% straight away. You’ll need to complete a declaration form, which we’ll provide and explain. Not every supplier flags this, so ask if it isn’t mentioned.

Keeping Costs Low

If budget is a concern, there are several ways to reduce what you pay without cutting corners on safety.

Personalised Pricing

A stairlift isn’t a commodity. It’s a solution built around your staircase, your body and your daily routine. Prices vary because no two installations are the same. A good supplier takes the time to understand your situation, explains your options honestly and gives you a clear, itemised quote after a proper survey.
That’s how we work at Obam. We’ve been helping people stay safely in their homes since 2000. Our approach hasn’t changed: assess properly, recommend honestly, fit expertly and support you for the long term. You can read more about how we personalise prices here.

What isn't included?

Knowing what sits outside a quote helps you budget properly and avoid surprises.

If your staircase needs building work before a stairlift can go in (widening, removing a cupboard, altering a banister) that falls outside the stairlift quote. It’s uncommon, but it does happen with older or non-standard properties. Your surveyor will flag it at the assessment stage.

The manufacturer’s warranty covers an initial period. After it expires, servicing and any repairs are down to you. You can take out a maintenance contract or book services as you go. Either way, regular servicing is recommended.

If you need to remove your stairlift later, or move it to a different property, that’s a separate service. Worth bearing in mind if your circumstances might change.

Stairlifts plug into a standard domestic socket. If there isn’t one near the base of your staircase, you may need an electrician to fit one. It’s a minor cost, but it sits outside the stairlift installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. An accurate price needs a surveyor to assess your staircase in person. Online estimates and telephone quotes can give you a rough idea, but they can’t account for the specifics of your stairs, your home layout or your individual needs. Any company offering a firm price without visiting is making assumptions.

Yes. A reputable supplier professionally restores each unit, replacing worn parts and testing all safety features before installation. Refurbished stairlifts come with warranty cover and meet the same safety standards as new ones. The main difference is cosmetic rather than functional.

We offer 0% finance options on some of our products. Ask a member of our team for details on what’s currently available and whether it applies to your situation.

A warranty comes with your purchase and covers faults for a set period from installation. A maintenance contract is an optional ongoing agreement you take out after the warranty expires. Depending on the contract, it covers annual servicing and labour, or both parts and labour for repairs.

A well-maintained stairlift typically lasts between 10 and 15 years. Regular servicing, prompt repairs and proper daily use all help it last longer.
